[epilepsy] Re: SS Disability

Hi Tim,

Well, I would say that you would have a very hard time getting disability because you have successfully held a job for nineteen years and nothing significant has occurred that would have altered your ability to perform your job. It sounds to me like your problem is more a dissatisfaction with the fact that they have overlooked you for any type of promotion during that time. Do you have any evidence that their not promoting you has been due to the fact that you have epilepsy? You might be able to file some sort of grievance claim if that is the case. Have you talked to your supervisor or higher-ups about your lack of promotions during that time? I would definitely do that, get some cards out on the table. They may be under the impression that a more stressful job would trigger seizures for you, or there may be some other reason you've not been promoted, whatever that might be.

I would imagine that as a government employee, you have good healthcare benefits and some type of pension plan, good vacation time by now, and perhaps some other benefits that have come with being there almost twenty years. I would think long and hard before giving up those things. It would seem to me that if you see the writing on the wall, and they are just never going to promote you to more challenging work, your best course of action is to stay with the FDA and quietly seek a more rewarding job. But do remember that old adage, "the grass is always greener...." Consider the value of what you have against what you might have as a new middle-aged employee somewhere else.

My best wishes to you.

PS Megan is in a different age and stage than you are, but she works part time and goes to college full-tume, taking a minimum full-time course load. She just recently got her license (like a week ago), and we live in a rural/suburban area where there is no public transportation, not even cabs, so I have been driving her everywhere. I note how long your days are already due to your lengthy commute, but you might want to look at even just a course or two to make yourself more valuable in the job market. You'll have to weigh that option carefully, as I am not familiar with how precarious your situation is in terms of how easy it is to trigger a seizure or what your triggers are. Good Luck!
