Hi Kate,
I had my first sz when I was carrying my 2nd daughter and my 2nd
sz when I was carry my 3rd daughter== 2 years apart. I was on
some med but don't know what.
The Dr. thought PG and I didn't go well together so I had my tubes
tied. 2 years later I had another sz. That took me 30 miles away to
the closest EEG machine at that time. There I found out that I have EP.
That was over 50 years ago.
Of course we have an EEG machine in our town now. I'd have to
want a baby very badly to go off my meds -- in fact I don't think I would
-- but then I have 3 daughters-- all in their 50's. I'm sure that makes
a difference. I am controlled by 3 Dilantin Mon, Wed, and Fri and 4
the other days and 4 30 gr phenabarb every day.
About a month ago I forgot to take my meds for 2 1/2 day (3 1/2) counting
the day they found me on the floor --not able to get up. I spent 3 hrs in
ER and 24 hrs in the hospital taking x-rays, and all kinds of tests, seeing a
PT to make sure I could walk and OT to make sure I could take care of
my self in my apt. My memory still isn't like it was before but getting
better.
I don't know why I didn't take my meds and we don't know how long I
was lying on the floor. In fact someone came to the door and asked if
I was working in the dining room that day and I said, "Yes, I will be there."
When in fact I was lying on the floor but didn't tell her I needed help. It
never occurred to me. I also did not call out for help to make any noise
to get help. That is how it affected my brain.
I am 80 yrs old and live in an independent 3 room retirement center apt.
I had not had a sz for over 5 years. Since those meds had controlled me
before my Dr. put me back on those meds. If they don't hold me-- he
will change them. I am feeling fine now but was black and blue and had
rug burns from the carpet I was lying on because I tried to get up but couldn't.
Good luck with whatever you decide. I'd like to keep in touch with you.
Millie

Subject: [epilepsy] epilepsy and pregnancy
Hi all,
I am 29 and medicated for ep, hoping to start a family. Just wondering what your experiences with epilepsy and pregnancy were. Please feel free to email me off list if you prefer kbenda83@gmail.com.
I have had epilepsy since age 10, currently taking 1000 mg of keppra daily. Did you choose to go off meds or stay with them for pregnancy?
Did ep make conceiving or pregnancy more difficult? What were you experiences? What worked/ didn't? I am willing to go off meds even if I can't drive. Going to the neuro next week, just trying to figure what's the best choice. I am working with a high risk ob and hospital. I have few seizures, 100% controlled by meds. When I did have seizures, it was because of fevers, diseases or medications- almost always while living overseas. Back in the US now, planning to stay for the foreseeable future.
Thanks!
Kate
