Hi Heather
Sounds like you are having a great time with your plants. I would not recommend a self or bottom watering container for the aloes. They , like most succulents are subject to root rot with a constantly moist soil condition.

My reason for trying this is mainly curiosity. Some of the people who are experimenting with subirrigation maintain that the plant will draw only the amount of water it needs ... that it is the root system of the plant that actually determines the moistness. This does indeed appear to be the case where I've tried it: I have a lime and an orange tree, which don't take much water, and they barely pull any, and the soil at the top is very dry. But the lettuces slurp a huge amount, and the soil is quite moist. When the plants get just the amount of water they want, they grow like crazy, and they don't get root rot (which was my constant problem with container plants in the past).

So an aloe plant would be a great experiment in this regards, since it's about the least water-tolerant plant I know of. I have about 20 of them at this point, so donating one to science won't be a great loss. I'm not sure what to do with the other 19 though ... I don't have room by my little window and it will shortly be too cold outside for them. I'm thinking of harvesting them and freezing the leaf in pieces.

On the fast 5 note, I have been weening down to one cup of coffee in the morning, and today brought a miscellany bag of herb teas to work with me. A solo 8 hour tea party....

Sounds delicious!
