Re: [epilepsy] Re: SS Disability

Hi Tim,

I work a full-time job, and always have. I'm not on SSDI, so I guess I don't have to worry in how much I earn. But I do have an hour commute both ways--driving. My last job I was lucky because I worked in the city and I was able to take the commuter rail into Boston. Last year though, I had a string of seizures, and my neurologist said I had to stop driving for a month. My current job requires me to do home visits, and then there's that pesky commute. So I had to take the commuter rail into Boston, then another train out to my job. It was a major hassle, and all during the winter. I can't move in closer to work, because rents are expensive, and I live on my own. I want to go back to school, but the drive I think would be too much.

As for just stopping work to collect SSDI, well, I know I make more working then I'd collect. Epilepsy is on the list of categories for SSDI, but is driving a major life function? How is epilepsy stopping you from working? People in NYC take the train every day to work. See what I mean? Are your seizures increasing? Are they meds making work impossible?

Millie and some one others who can respond,

Has anybody been able to go to work spending allot of time going to and back
home each day via bus or/and trains because of they can't legally drive due to
seizures/epilepsy.I do receive a disability discount on fare prices, but I'm not
given a reasonable job at work. Was hired in '91 at grade 4 moved to grade 5 in
'92 and still noon.I began to work at FDA because my neurologist always
prescribed medicines that were approved by them,so when I was offered a job with
them and others I chose that.Nineteen years later I'm still in colors which is
nowhere near medicines/drugs.I can't drive to school after I spend 8.5 hrs
working & 4.4 hrs each day traveling back and forth to work.I was hired after
learning computer programing at a school for disabled people. There are levels
grade 3-13,you could be promoted to..I feel like a disabled person that the
federal government hires for each year.I should just stop being w/o any work for
years and maybe just collect SSDI.In '92 the Washington Post of 6/18/92, is
titled Md. Man's Nightmare Began After Seizure, the a story starts off saying,
"Timothy B. Baldwin is an epileptic. But, a recent,a episode at Union Station,
drew him into a Kafkaesque brush with Amtrak police. According to Baldwin,a
computer clerk at Food and Drug Administration in Washington,it all began about
6:45pm on June 9 as he waited for MARC commuter train. Without warning, he went
into a seizure"...I was to be taken to St.Elizabeth Hospital for a psychiatric
evaluation, Washington Metropolitan Police got involved because Amtrak police
couldn't travel off station grounds, and on.Could I claim disability while being
held up and doing nothing at work or can I just stop working.
Thanks,
Tim Baldwin

With all the talk about SSDI I thought I would share this link. It is
the link to the listings page on SS website. A listing is a specific
medical condition that qualifies one for SSDI. TO qualify you either
need to meet a listing, or prove other disabling factors that effect
ones ability to work. A listing is easier to prove since they are all
very specific in nature, and if a person meets more then one listing it
becomes easier to qualify.

Here is the website:
http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/AdultListings.htm

it is broken down by body system, then description. Epilepsy is under
Neurological.
