Re: [epilepsy] 'Happy December'

I'm glad to hear that. Not everyone believes they have anything to do with seizures, and I'll have to say I'm not totally convinced myself. However... It's been 8 years since I've had any sucralose or aspartame; and it's been 8 years since I've had a seizure. So I'm probably not gonna load up on diet sodas anytime soon.

When I was first diagnosed,  my neurologist said no artificial sweeteners,  since they can cause seizures.   I never had them anyway,  but you were right!

Hey, Sara & everybody! Things are going really well for me. I haven't had a seizure for almost 8 years, and I'm very thankful for that. I never had a seizure until I was well past middle age. Had one or two complex-partials a year for about 10 years. The last time I had a seizure, I had two back-to-back and they just wouldn't stop. I also had convulsions in my arms that night, which was a new wrinkle. Anyway, I ended up in the ER. The doctor on duty explained that if I chose not to take medication, there wasn't anything he could do for me. I thanked him, but declined the meds. (If I had been having seizures more often, I would not have hesitated to go on medication.) My brain has become so sensitive since I started having seizures that I have to be extremely careful with anything - even over-the-counter meds. Surgeries and major dental work (extractions) pose a real problem, since pain medications pretty much send me over the edge. Anyway... that night when I left the ER I made a decision to stop using any artificial sweeteners (aspartame & sucralose). It's been 8 years since I used any artificial sweeteners, and 8 years since I've had a seizure. It may be coincidence, and I certainly would NOT advise anyone else to follow my lead, but it occurs to me that the sweeteners may have lowered the threshold just enough for seizures to break through. Anyhoo, that's my experience.

Come in and let us know how you are doing.

Good experiences, bad ones or anything epilepsy related.

My newest type of seizure is sort of 'staring seizure' but I know I am staring. I just can't bring myself out of it.

My other type is where I almost lose balance.  It is like when you almost trip over something but catch yourself.  I don't usually fall or lose consciousness in those.

Although I do at times have types where I think I lose consciousness for a second or so.
