Re: [epilepsy] 'Happy December'

I've been taking E meds for 40 years. FOr the first 15 or so years with full control. Since the control was lost I mainly had CP szrs, whereas the first ones were tonic clonic but nocturnal. Now I get lots of small szrs (CPs) mainly in clusters. Nearly 2 weeks ago I needed a tooth extraction (actually the one next came with it). I felt OK when it was being done and afterwards when I was paying. I sat down for a minute to where my wife was waiting and I felt slightly feint and hot. It appeared to pass, before coming back strong. Next thing I knew I was still sitting, but had been out cold for 5 minutes (my wife said my arms were shaking) while one of the other dentists was asking me if I was OK now. I knew nothing of this of course. I had been given a cup of water before going out cold and seemed I'd spilt it until I realised the liquid to my horror it had come out of me! THey had called paramedics then cancelled as I appeared to be better. They got me laying on a dental chair but I remained feintish and sweaty before vomiting. By then another paramedic had been dispatched and I was taken off to A&E bu which time I was fine. Anyway I was given several ECGs, BP, blood tests etc and 4 hours later I was let out. THe dentist thought it was the culmination of my anxiety, the adrenalin in the local anaesthetic, my epilepsy and the extraction itself. I also had a sizable abscess which had burst.

I never have any artificial sweeteners, but that's because I don't like any cola type drinks, nor do I sweeten tea or coffee with anything. I have certainly heard it helps to avoid it though.

Hey, Sara & everybody! Things are going really well for me. I haven't had a seizure for almost 8 years, and I'm very thankful for that. I never had a seizure until I was well past middle age. Had one or two complex-partials a year for about 10 years. The last time I had a seizure, I had two back-to-back and they just wouldn't stop. I also had convulsions in my arms that night, which was a new wrinkle. Anyway, I ended up in the ER. The doctor on duty explained that if I chose not to take medication, there wasn't anything he could do for me. I thanked him, but declined the meds. (If I had been having seizures more often, I would not have hesitated to go on medication.) My brain has become so sensitive since I started having seizures that I have to be extremely careful with anything - even over-the-counter meds. Surgeries and major dental work (extractions) pose a real problem, since pain medications pretty much send me over the edge. Anyway... that night when I left the ER I made a decision to stop using any artificial sweeteners (aspartame & sucralose). It's been 8 years since I used any artificial sweeteners, and 8 years since I've had a seizure. It may be coincidence, and I certainly would NOT advise anyone else to follow my lead, but it occurs to me that the sweeteners may have lowered the threshold just enough for seizures to break through. Anyhoo, that's my experience.
