Doris,
Memory difficulties are a common problem in epilepsy due to both
seizures and our medications. There are ways to improve the problem,
and to learn to cope.
Everyone on here has different things that have worked for them, but
here are a few that have worked for me. Kepp in mind that memory can
take the form of visual memory, auditory memory, or tactile memory.
-Do puzzles of several sorts. This builds visual memory.
-Read regularly. Reading requires the use of our very short term
memory, short term memory, the process of making short term memory long
term, and long term memory. It might be frustrating at first, but it
will help.
-Make lists for things, categorizing where you can. It is easier for
your brain to remember lists when things fall into categories. As you
shop, try to remember the things on the list without looking, based on
the categories they are in. I use to have the hardest time shopping
because I would forget what was on my list, that I just looked at! When
I started breaking things into defined categories, then only trying to
recall one category at a time, it made a huge difference.
-When you have something you need to remember to do, picture yourself
doing it, everything form the time it is at to walking through the
steps. This stores the information differently then when we just use words.
Those are just a few I have used. I am sure others can give you even
more suggestions. Don't get to frustrated, because it will take time.
Keep practicing just like you do anything else you learn.
