We have pointed to Panonychus citri as well as Citrus bergamia. It is generaly agreed that one avian influenza entry point in ducks is the ethmoid sinus, and this would compare with the chronic exposure to bergamot aromatics at the Marburg factory.
Concerning the distribution of chemistries and viruses through trade, there is
'The fruit sector is obviously affected by this general trend towards the liberalisation of trade and the Southern Hemisphere. Producer countries pressed hard in the Uruguay Round negotiations, to have greater access to Northern Hemisphere markets....In particular, the Asian region has been an area of strong growth.'
(OECD, Export Fruit Boom from the South: A Threat for the North? [1996])
Gastrodia: Chinese 'tian ma'....vanilyl alcohol (first noted in 1958), phytosterol 3-O-(4-hydroxybenzyl)-beta-sitosterol ether, and sulfur-containing bis(4-hydroxybenzyl)sulfoxide, and S-(4-hydroxybenzyl)glutathione, nitrogen-containing N,N-bis(4-hydroxybenzyl)hydroxylamine and alpha-acetylaminophenylpropyl-alpha-benzoylaminophenylpropionate....Not naturally occurring in continental Africa, but Gastrodia sesamoides R. Br. was introduced by accident in 1944 and has become naturalized.'
(Genera Orchidacearum, op cit)
Methyl and methane moieties, this is an example of the chemistry that was introduced two decades before Marburg emerged in Germany, thus pointing another example for comparison to the two decade incubation time of HIV-2, a supposedly older virus than HIV-1.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum (Rchb. f.) Stein 1892 syn. Cypripedium rothschildianum 1888 si considered by many the aristocrat of slipper orchids with its graceful petals held out like the arms of the local Sumazau dancers. The curious glandular hairs on the bent staminode have been shown by Atwood (1985) to mimic an aphid colony which is the normal brood site of Syrphid flies (Dideopsis aegrota). When these flies are fooled into laying eggs on the staminode, they often fall into the pouch-like lip. Escape is only possible through a gap between the stigma and pollonia and thereby affecting pollination. The population in the known locality within the Kinabalu National Park has been seriously depleted by collectors. The other site, degazetted from the Park in recent years, has been destroyed by fire. So far recorded only from ultramafic rocks, 500-1800m altitude.'
(Chan, Orchids of Borneo)
'Didea Macquart syn Enica Macquart type of genus. D. fasciata Marquart, Europe.
D. fasciata fucipes, Connecticut, Pennsylvania!
D. laxa Osten Sacken, New Hampshire, California, Washington Territory, Oregon! Michigan, Maine.
Three speciments from White Mountains, 33 from Oregon and Washington Territory, also 3 from California. This species corresponds to D. alneti of Europe. In a single specimen I have from Holland, the bands are narrower on the abdomen and brownish color of wings is fainter.'
(Syrphidae, Bulletin of the United States National Museum No. 31)
Thus, if an orchid secretes virus-infected substances that come into contact with such things as hover flies, there ia an immediate mechanical vectoring of virus away from the plant to somewhere else, just as would happen with the tsetse fly. Though difficult for Glossina species to invade birds....
'At least in Glossina morsitans, fowl's blood clots readily, with results that are frequently fatal.'
(Buxton PA, The Natural Hi,story of Tsetse Flies),
