Today I had another neuro psych eval, and it has been just over 4 years
since my RTL. I found what he had to say very interesting, and I though
I would share it.
He told me some basics of how the brain operates, most of which I knew.
We take in information from our senses, it is then filtered, and sent to
the needed areas of our brain. Having my right temporal removed has
caused me to be sensitive to the amount of information I take in because
that filtering process no longer operates at the same capacity. In
addition the area removed help to control the responses I had to the
information received. THis means my oimbic system has taken over part
of that operation, and is doing more work. The limbic system controls
innate responses, like protection. It is what causes you to put your
hand up when something comes near your face. THe limbic system gets
overloaded now, and this causes my reactiosn to be more from innate
behavior then intellectual behavior. Even though I KNOW intellectually
that my responses are not needed, I automatically and innately respond
that way because my limbic system triggers the response that is now not
controlled and buffered.
Explaining that to me helped me understand some of what I do that makes
no sense, but I don't control. It also explains why I get so
overwhelmed with too much stimuli, and why sound is so distracting and
irritating when I am trying to concentrate. He did say it is something
that can be worked on, relearned, changed.
