There may be a reason why we are culturally conditioned to encourage
people to put weight on as a safety precaution

For most (95% or more) of the last 4000+ years of human existence we
all of us, lived a subsistence existence and so not able to get too fat
and stay fat because food was not abundant. In addition, we were not
able to reliably predict when the next famine or natural disaster like
bush fire or hurricane took away all our reliable source of food for a
fairly extended period of time. Only those with a little bit more stored
fat lived through those times and were then able to breed and produce
the next generation.

Hence, ideas like "being too thin can be bad for you" and also "bad for
us all if you die before you breed and raise your family" carried a lot
of cultural responsibility.
