Subject: [epilepsy] Loneliness

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to share something that has helped me immensley over the last few
years as i have struggled with trying to find the right drugs to control my
epilepsy and their side effects - depression, pain, anxiety, tiredness etc...

I am a mother of two young girls and suffer from lots of different types of
Simple and Complex partial seizures. Having been through periods of being
housebound cause of my seizures and medication sideeffects and also suffering
the isolation that having young children can sink you into as you try to make a
life that includes providing everything they need first (lots of meals and a
relatively tidy house with clean clothes in it ^^) I have suffered the
loneliness that a lot of other people have expressed here in this group.

The main thing that has helped me gain confidence in myself as an individual and
the knowledge that i am someone who can really help and inspire others has been
networking on Second Life this past few years. Particularly the nice people at
GimpGirl who bring women of all types of disability together. Second Life is an
online virtual world that has conference centres, beaches, horse riding, themed
environments... just about anything the human mind can come up with. And there
are always people to chat to as soon as you log in in my experience, so when i
have needed support.. (there are epilepsy groups you can join) i can just log in
and get it straight away most of the time. This has led to me popping in and
helping others in the same way.. hence the empowerment for me.

So we all have our own paths, but for those who are going through a difficult
time or feel isolated or who live with their parents and need an aspect of
'their own culture and life' i would recommend getting a free account and seeing
what happens there for you. I am a teacher now in SL and its made me a happier
mum and wife in 'Real Life' and i feel less oppressed by my seizures (which
probably reduces my seizures at the same time as i'm sure some of them are
directly related to stress)

Much love to you, my brothers and sisters in epilepsy,

Emily
