Re: [epilepsy] Is decline common?

I finally got in to see an epileptologist @ Childrens in Pittsburgh. I
learned more about Mindy's seizures and sclerosis in one appt than I had at
a Neurologists in all the previous years combined!! Love this lady DR
Holder and her nurse Michele

My personal recommendation is that you find an epileptologist. I first
started seeing neurologists as a college freshman when I had a breakthrough
sz (first in 7 years) along with a brutal reaction to a medication, and I
will NEVER see a "generic" neuro again as long as I live. Epis are epilepsy
specialists. I think you and your daughter will find them much more useful
and probably more helpful, too.

Good luck!

Does anyone have a neurologist( adult) that they really like. I live on Long
Island (NY) and am very willing to go into the city. My daughter (20 yrs
old) was just diagnosed 6 weeks ago and the initial neurologist still has
not seen her for a follow up visit after all the tests and the seizures are
still not controlled. He is totally unavailable and my phone calls are not
returned. I guess his practice is just too large or he doesnt really care.
Thank you-Erika

You're right Uggie. Over time, seizures can and do cause damage. Usually,
the affected area is able to transfer control to another area of the brain.
For example, 20+ years of left temporal lobe seizures cause sclerosis (scar
tissue) in my left temporal lobe. Gradually, my speech, language, and memory
transferred to my right temporal lobe.

I disagree with what others are saying. My 17 yr old daughter has problems
associated with Epilepsy - NOT her Meds. She has increased memory loss,
loss of fine motor skills, muscle tone and coordination. All these are a
result of seizures in her left temporal lobe - which is where all her damage
is IT is takin over the area that controls these items. Understand what I
mean??

Is it common to see a decline in abilities from seizures? My son is
diagnosed since September, and we have seen a decline in his ability both
with gross and fine motor coordination as well as a decrease in his overall
endurance.

Thanks.
Jennifer
