[epilepsy] Re: Epilepsy and Memory

Hi Uggie,

Megan had a lot of trouble in school, but her problems mostly stemmed
from having ADD. I also have read that the side effects of some anti-
seizure meds can cause problems with memory/learning. I'm not saying
that epilepsy itself doesn't cause problems. I'm just suggesting that
you make sure that other issues are not causing or adding to your
daughter's problems. Both in public schools and in college, they will
make accommodations to help students learn, aside from tutoring, but
you have to request them. Sometimes you will have to document what
problems your daughter has. For college accommodations, we had to get
a letter from the person who did the diagnostic tests that determined
Megan had ADD, and a letter from the neurologist indicating that she
had epilepsy, and including some accommodations that she might
require. She is allowed to have a note taker take notes for her, can
miss classes due to seizures, can have video recordings of classes or
audio recordings of classes, can have non-timed tests, etc.

If you know your daughter is of normal intelligence (or better), you
might request that the school evaluate her to determine if she has
any specific learning problems that they can address. That is
generally the route to getting special accommodations in junior high
and high school. We did not ask for any accommodations in high
school, but in hindsight it would probably have been better for Megan
if we had.

I wish your daughter the very best. I know from when Megan has had
problems in school how terrible that can make a person feel. I hope
your daughter has things that she is good at that help her to feel
good about herself. Megan always had karate, her singing, dancing and
acting that made her feel good.

Take care,
Tammy
