Hello,
I hope someone can help me. My 54 year old brother has had epilepsy since he was 13. He has been taking Dilantin since then, and is also taking Kepra and Lamictal with pretty good seizure control.
We know Dilantin does cause gum problems, but until last year and seeing a new neurologist, he told us that Dilantin can cause osteoporosis. Well my brother had a bone density test last year and his spine/ hip fracture rate is mildly increased.
As a result, we tried last month to get him off Dilantin and switch to Zonegram, but this was a bad failure. Two weeks into coming off Dilantin, he started having one seizure after another, went to the hospital by ambulance, it took him about 3 days to fully wake up and another week to fully recover. He is back on Dialantin, Keppra and Lamictal and relativey seizure free. His neuro said we could try again to get him off Dilantin and do medicne change with 5 days in the hospital, and we said no thank you.
The neurologist suggested next we see an endocrinologist to see if something live Boniva, Actonel or some other type of drug might help. Has anyone else gone to an endrcrinologist with sort of the same problem and I am wondering which drug or what they did they suggest.
My brother does take Calcium and Vitamin D daily.
Thanh you,
Lea
