About 6 weeks ago my husband and I took my son to the Childrens Museum
in Salt Lake. We were playing when we noticed a woman walk in with
service dog-A small collie. My husband and I looked at each other
immediately and said "I almost bet that is a seizure alert dog!". A
while later the woman came into an area we were in and sat down. Some
of the children of course were awed by her beautiful small dog =) The
mother told her child-you probably need to ask to pet the dog hon -and
asked the woman -isn't that right since she is working?- I was glad to
see a mom that actually asked! The woman told her yes-thank you-but it
is fine they can pet her.
At that point I struck up a conversation with the woman in general about
service dogs telling her that it was nice the mother asked. She said
yes it was of course. I complimented her dog on how well behaved she
was despite all the noise and children. Then I politely asked her "May
I ask you what your service dog is for-if you are willing to share?" She
then told me that-yes indeed-she was a seizure alert dog! I told the
woman that I had wondered as much when I saw her. She went on to tell
me that this was her second dog. We had an amazing conversation,
sharing our stories. It was wonderful to meet someone face to face with
such an amazing story!
