Subject: [epilepsy] Hi Everyone
I adopted a boy with multiple handicaps in 1990. He was 8 years old at that time functioning at about 20 months old. He was still wearing diapers and he slept tied in a crib. We were told he would probably never function much past a 2 year old level. The Doctor said theatrically it was medically impossible for this child to move a finger; or roll over with such damage to the brain.
Jeremiah is 27 years old now. He wears a helmet because of his constant seizure activity and because his brain is inoperable. He learned to walk on his own at age 7. But still has poor balance and needs help to walk outside in the yard or down a side walk. We were able to educate him. He reads everything, writes a little, and talks intelligible
He now attends an Adult Day Program, takes care of his assistant, seeing eye, and seizure alert dog, James, and helps in the kitchen. He lives in and out of a "Play and Pretend World. " His passions are all about people and cars. He'll probably need supervised care all his life.
And thank you for letting me share our story.
