Prince a crowd-pleaser as Montreux festival ends US pop star Prince enters his hotel after the first of two shows he performed during the Montreux Jazz Festival MONTREUX, Switzerland — The 43th edition of the Montreux music festival came to a close Saturday with US rock star Prince treating a swaying crowd of 4,400 to tunes both familiar and novel. Sporting a red suit, Prince gave two concerts in the Stravinsky auditorium that sold out in less than eight minutes despite the global economic crisis and a ticket price of 480 Swiss francs (315 euros, 450 dollars) per seat. Indeed, organisers said this year's festival was "crowned with success" both artistically and in terms of attendance, with 230,000 music lovers attending 95 ticketed concerts over two weeks -- up 10,000 from last year. Among those who played Montreux this year were Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, Black Eyed Peas, Alice Cooper, Steve Winwood, Monty Alexander, Lily Allen, Wyclef Jean, Marianne Faithfull, John Fogerty, Grace Jones and B.B. King. Many free shows were also performed on more than seven stages around this city on the banks of Lake Geneva. Copyright © 2009 AFP. All rights reserved. More » ![]() Map
