Heidi you asked "How is Dani doing?"
Dani is managing. The surgery did not cure the ep, (we were told it
probably won't because having more than one center in the brain were the
seizures were developing from) but it probably helped. It took a LONG time
to realize the results. The brain surgery is a lot to put a child through-
she was 11 at the time. We were told she had a progressive form of ep that
would significantly shorten her life span- if we hadn't done the surgery.
We felt like we really didn't have a choice and had to act her her best
interest, even though we knew it wouldn't cure her. None the less, these are
very difficult decisions for parents to make. At the time we had one of the
internationally recognized pediatric neuro MD's on children with
uncontrolled seizures. (Tracy Glouser,MD- Cincinnati Children's Nedical
Center) treating Dani. He goes all over speaking about pediatric children
with uncontrolled ep. He strongly supported the need for the surgery.
Her life wasn't "normal" before because of the numerous seizures most all
types incl GMs.
Her life isn't normal now due to the high doses of meds she takes 2x daily
and the intellectual damage done to her by the seizures and from having part
of her brain removed (right frontal resection) she has some learning
disabilties that no longer make college an option. She tried.
Dani has many gifts because of what she has been through with her Ep and
the death of her mother 10/07, she can empathize with others going through
life trials. After 2 years working with Voc Rehab she will be starting a
work placement job in a florist arrange flowers,etc- 3 hours a day 4 days a
week. It may become a real job working. Dani is very artistic. The florist
job will give her the opportunity to use her natural art ability.
Voc rehab did place her in a job about a year ago in an Assisted Living
facility working from 6am - Noon. That didn't work out because of the hours
and the mutli-tasking. When you take as much meds as she does 6 am just
doesn't work.
